Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island are neighboring barrier islands off the eastern coast of South Carolina. Both islands feature secluded communities with miles of pristine beaches, maritime forests, sand dunes, and marshes! Although both have the same laid-back island vibe, convenient resort amenities, and luxury vacation rentals, Kiawah and Seabrook each offer their own differences.
Read on to learn more about the differences between Kiawah and Seabrook Island, including their different locations, island sizes, athletic facilities, beach activities, vacation rentals, and more!
#1 Location
Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island are both secluded barrier islands, conveniently located just 25 miles from Charleston, SC. Upon arrival at the islands, you will approach a roundabout on Kiawah Island Parkway– this is the only way on and off the islands, so it’s impossible to miss!Take the first exit to head toward the Seabrook Island entrance, the second exit to visit Freshfields Village, and the third exit to travel toward Kiawah Island. Kiawah and Seabrook Island are located only about 8 miles apart, or a 20-minute drive, separated by the roundabout with an open-air shopping center inbetween.
#2 Size
Kiawah Island is the much larger of the two islands, offering 11 miles of preserved land while Seabrook Island encompasses 7 miles. Seabrook is a much smaller gated community but remains Charleston, South Carolina’s only truly private oceanfront community with resort access. Kiawah, on the other hand, is a much larger community where you can enjoy Lowcountry island-living on a larger scale.
#3 Atmosphere
Due to Kiawah Island’s larger size and world-renowned Ocean Course, it is the more action-packed, busier, upscale option of the two islands. Seabrook Island, however, is more quiet and family-friendly with less hustle & bustle and more laid-back residential communities.
#4 Shopping & Dining
Kiawah and Seabrook Island are both centrally located near Freshfields Village, which features over 30 boutique shops, numerous delicious restaurants, relaxing spas, exciting activities, holiday festivals, and more! The two islands also feature their own shops and restaurants, though. On Kiawah Island, you can find chic boutiques at the Kiawah Island Resort, as well as numerous fine dining restaurants with stunning views and delectable cuisine. Over on the Seabrook Island side but just before the entry gates, you can find the Bohicket Marina & Market full of gift shops, local restaurants, and waterfront views.
#5 On-Island Facilities & Activities
Kiawah and Seabrook are both home to numerous world-class athletic facilities, but each have their own special attractions. Kiawah is home to 5 award-winning golf courses, including the famed Ocean Course designed by Pete Dye, 30 miles of paved biking trails, 10 miles of stunning beachfront for swimming, surfing, paddling, fishing, and more, as well as the Roy Barth Tennis Center.
Seabrook features two championship Audubon-certified golf courses including the Crooked Oaks and the Ocean Winds Courses, a tournament-level racquet club, an Equestrian Center offering horseback riding on the beach, pristine beaches for swimming, surfing, paddling, fishing, and more, as well as an Island Club fitness center.
