Ready to explore the wonders of nature in South Carolina? Nestled in the charming and historic city of Charleston, the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE) stands as a celebration of the beauty and diversity of the region’s natural world. This annual event brings together nature enthusiasts, wildlife artists, and conservationists to showcase the rich tapestry of Southeastern wildlife. Join us on a virtual journey as we explore the magic of SEWE and the captivating experiences it offers.
DATE: Friday, February 16 – Sunday, February 18, 2024
What Is It?
Wildlife and nature lovers can experience the largest wildlife and sporting event in the nation at the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE). This three-day annual event takes place on President’s Day weekend at five separate venues in Charleston – Charleston Place Fine Art Gallery, Gaillard Center, Marion Square, Charleston Marriott, and beautiful Brittlebank Park on the banks of the Ashley RIver. SEWE offers a true taste of the Lowcountry – fine art exhibits by wildlife painters and sculptors, conservation education programs, live demonstrations, and Lowcountry socials with oysters, bbq, and bluegrass to dust off your dancing boots!
SEWE is a family friendly event with unlimited entertainment for the kids! The Brittlebank Park venue has a “Kids Zone” with an exotic petting zoo, hands-on activities, fun games, educational programs, and pony and camel rides for the kids. The Marion Square venue has a smaller kids section with hands-on activities, Birds of Prey flight demonstrations, and presentations by the Dolphin Doctor. Accompanying adults do not need a ticket for Marion Square. For pet parents, please note that leashed and well-behaved dogs are welcome at all outdoor venues, but not on the SEWE shuttles.
The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in Charleston is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of nature’s beauty and a call to action for conservation. Whether you’re an art aficionado, a wildlife enthusiast, or someone looking to connect with the great outdoors, SEWE offers a unique and immersive experience. So, mark your calendar for next February and embark on a journey to discover the treasures of the Southeastern wildlife in the heart of charming Charleston.
Why Charleston?
Charleston, with its cobblestone streets, antebellum architecture, and rich cultural heritage, provides a picturesque backdrop for SEWE. The event usually takes place in February, making it an ideal time to explore the city’s historic charm while immersing oneself in the wonders of nature.
What To Do?
Wildlife Art: SEWE is renowned for its impressive display of wildlife art from talented artists across the country. From intricately detailed sculptures to vibrant paintings, the event transforms Charleston into a gallery showcasing the beauty of the Southeast’s diverse flora and fauna. Visitors can expect to encounter pieces that not only capture the essence of wildlife but also highlight the importance of conservation.
Birds of Prey Demonstrations: One of the most thrilling aspects of SEWE is the Birds of Prey demonstrations. Expert falconers and handlers showcase the incredible skills of these majestic birds, offering an up-close and personal experience. Witnessing the agility and grace of raptors like eagles, hawks, and owls is an unforgettable experience that fosters a deeper appreciation for these magnificent creatures.
DockDogs Competition: For a dose of excitement, SEWE features the DockDogs competition, where dogs showcase their jumping and retrieving skills in water. Enthusiastic canine athletes leap off docks into a large pool, demonstrating their athleticism and love for the water. It’s a family-friendly event that adds a playful element to the wildlife exposition.
Conservation Education: SEWE is not just about entertainment; it also serves as an educational platform for wildlife conservation. Visitors can engage with experts and organizations dedicated to preserving the Southeast’s natural habitats. Workshops, lectures, and interactive exhibits provide valuable insights into the importance of protecting the region’s biodiversity.
Outdoor Lifestyle Exhibits: Explore the outdoor lifestyle of the Southeast through exhibits featuring hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities. From gear demonstrations to discussions on sustainable practices, these exhibits offer a comprehensive look at the region’s outdoor traditions.
VIP Packages include entry to all venues, live shows, and exhibits, as well as exclusive perks and insider access to immersive experiences. A limited number of VIP packages are available ranging from $300 to $6,000.
There are several public parking garages in downtown Charleston and a complimentary SEWE shuttle service between all SEWE venues. With the exception of the Charleston Marriott and Brittlebank Park venues, you can easily walk between exhibits and soak up the Lowcountry charm of Charleston. Visit the SEWE website for shuttle information. For transportation from Seabrook Island & Kiawah Island, Island Transportation offers black car service to special events in and around Charleston – simply book online!
