The Sanctuary hosts the “Summer Concert Series” every Saturday evening during summer on The Grand Lawn from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Over 400,000 people visit the Angel Oak each year to picnic in the shade of this magnificent Lowcountry treasure measuring 65-ft tall, 25.5-ft wide and providing over 17,000 sq ft of shade.

South Carolina Aquarium

The South Carolina Aquarium is located in Charleston’s Liberty Square on the Cooper River waterfront and features 9 galleries with over 100 exhibits and over 6,000 aquatic animals! Exhibits include the Piedmont Region of South Carolina, a Mountain Forest, Coastal Plains, a Saltmarsh Aviary, an interactive Touch Tank, and North America’s deepest tank, the Great Ocean Tank.

The South Carolina Aquarium is also home to the Sea Turtle Care Center with a hospital and learning center for visitors to discover the journey of the loggerhead sea turtle from rescue, rehab and recovery to release back into the Atlantic Ocean.

Fort Sumter

Located next to the aquarium is the Fort Sumter Visitor Center with interpretive and visual exhibits, and a regular ferry service for history buffs to visit one of the guardians of Charleston Harbor and the site where the American Civil War began, the Fort Sumter National Monument. The Fort Sumter National Monument is set on an island in Charleston Harbor and is only accessible by boat.

Culinary Village Shuttle: The Culinary Village Shuttle operates daily from 11 AM – 6 PM between the Charleston Visitor Center in downtown Charleston to Riverfront Park in North Charleston. Shuttles to Riverfront Park depart every 30 minutes starting at the top of the hour. Return shuttles are scheduled every 30 minutes following the event start time. If you’re riding with Uber, Lyft, or Island Transportation from Kiawah or Seabrook Island, drop off is at the Long Point Road entrance.

Bohemian Bull: In the same neighborhood you’ll find Bohemian Bull, a casual tavern and beer garden with craft beers and cocktails, live music and all you can eat oyster roasts every Thursday. Throw your Own Oyster Roast

Oyster beds line the banks of the Kiawah River between Seabrook Island and Kiawah Island which are easily accessible during the low tide. A fishing license is required and available locally at tackle stores covering all your fishing activities including crabbing, clamming, shrimping and oystering.

Start a new tradition of your own, purchase your oyster roasting tools, roll up your sleeves and host your own oyster roast with friends and family. Family Friendly Kiawah Holiday Guide 2024

The Holiday Festival of Lights is a top nighttime attraction and one of Charleston’s favorite events during the holiday season. James Island transforms to a magical winter wonderland with three miles of over 750 fantastical light displays (an estimated 2 million lights!) ranging from Rudolph and Santa Clause to an Amazing Dancing Light Display. Take a driving tour then stop for a visit at Santa’s Village with festive train rides, an old-fashioned carousel, an enchanted walking trail, marshmallow roasting pits and festive food stands. The festival ends with a spectacular display of fireworks on New Year’s Eve and is not to be missed.    

3. First Friday Christmas Market

James Island, SC

The First Friday Christmas Market takes place at the Town Market on James Island early in the holiday season with fresh local produce, arts and crafts, food trucks, tasty, sweet treats and a free movie on the big screen at dusk. If you’re visiting Seabrook Island later in the season, the Charleston Farmers Market and Sea Island Farmers Market on Johns Island are open year-round on Saturdays with holiday crafts and delicious local fresh produce to restock your vacation supplies. 

4. Freshfields Village

10. New Year’s Day Polar Bear Plunge

Plunge into the New Year at Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s Polar Bear Plunge. Come and celebrate new beginnings with us as we gather on Kiawah’s beach, just in front of the Sanctuary Hotel, to take a dip into The Atlantic. All participants must bring their own towel to this event.

11. New Year’s Day 5k

There’s no better way to ring in the New Year than a beach fun run! This one mile or 5k run/walk will begin at the Sanctuary Beach Access and head towards The Ocean Course. Please bring your own water bottle.

12. Kid’s Night Out: New Year’s Eve Bash

The Kid’s Night Out programs provide everything needed for an exciting and adventurous experience for young vacationers and local residents. Dinner is included.
