Where To Watch The Sunset On Kiawah Island?

Spectacular Lowcountry sunrise and sunset views are part of Mother Nature’s perfect package when you vacation on the South Carolina coastline. Charleston is famous for its romantic sunsets but if you’re looking to escape the urban vibe and reconnect with nature, there’s nowhere quite like Kiawah Island.

Situated only a 45 minute drive from Charleston, Kiawah Island is a small barrier island with an incredible ecosystem of maritime forests, saltwater marshes and Atlantic coastline abounding in wildlife, birdlife and friendly bottlenose dolphins. The east-west orientation of Kiawah Island makes it a prime spot to capture sunrises and sunsets …. in fact, the best sunrises and sunsets you’ll ever experience!

Kiawah Exclusives have 40+ years of local knowledge which we love to share with our guests. While every sunset on Kiawah Island is a must-see there are a few extra special places that top the charts as the best sunset spots on Kiawah Island.

Atlantic Ocean Sunset at Beachwalker Park

Nothing beats a day on the wild, natural and uncrowded beaches of Kiawah Island. Beachwalker Park on Kiawah Island is ranked one of the Top 10 Beaches in America by Dr. Beach and, no matter the season, a beach day never disappoints. Kiawah’s 10 miles of uninterrupted shoreline are idyllic for low tide walks, bike riding, calm ocean dips, and spectacular sunset views. As daylight turns to dusk, the serenity of the waves crashing, wildlife roaming the dunes, and the sun sinking below the horizon makes for a breathtaking sunset over the Atlantic Ocean at Beachwalker Park!

Kiawah Island’s beaches are uncrowded and secluded, but the amenities are amazing. Island Beach Services will set up your chairs and umbrellas for the day and Surfscooter Bike Rentals will drop off beach bike rentals for the entire clan before you even arrive – tons of hassle-free fun and picture-perfect Atlantic sunsets from the beach.

Sunset View Towers over Kiawah Island’s Waterways

Hop back on your bikes and ride the nature trails for a solitary sunset from Kiawah Island’s observation towers. Biking around Kiawah Island takes you through lush maritime forests, tranquil marshlands, and magnolia lined avenues to the most beautiful sunset spots on the island.

Pedal the Kiawah Island Parkway trail to Marsh View Tower in West Beach for 360-degree sunset views over Cougar Point Golf Course or bike the trails to Vanderhorst Plantation. The bike trail winds along Governor’s Drive to the Marsh Island Park View Tower and Blue Heron Pond observation tower overlooking vast marshlands abounding in birdlife, wildlife and sun-kissed skies. The sunset views from Kiawah Island’s observation towers are incredible!

Kiawah River Sunset at Mingo Point

Mingo Point is famous for its Lowcountry Oyster Roasts … but is also one of the best spots for a sunset on Kiawah Island. Situated along the banks of the Kiawah River on the west end of the island, Mingo Point is a tranquil riverfront setting for a sunset picnic – or amp up the adventure level and launch a kayak to fish and explore the Lowcountry waterways.

October to May is peak oyster harvest and roasting season! If you’re yet to experience Kiawah Island’s longest running tradition, plan your stay for the Thanksgiving Mingo Point Oyster Roast – a double whammy of a flavorful Lowcountry oyster roast and spectacular fall sunset.

Sunset Dolphin Cruise or Solitary Sunset Paddle

Kiawah Island is known for its wide variety of eco-friendly nature tours with activities for every age and adventure level to experience a Lowcountry sunset from the water. Whether you’re seeking an intimate sunset sail, a family sunset dolphin cruise, or a solitary paddle – exploring the Lowcountry waterways at dusk is a wonderful way to wildlife watch and catch the sunset on Kiawah Island

Our Kiawah Exclusives Guide includes a list of recommendations for local guides, boat rentals, charters, paddle tours and dolphin cruises alongside our friendly resident pods.

The Best Lowcountry Sunsets at Bohicket Marina

Nestled along Bohicket Creek between Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island, Bohicket Marina is one of the Lowcountry’s best marinas for boating and fishing charters … and delivers one of the most spectacular sunsets in the Charleston sea islands.

Get out on the Kiawah Island creeks and rivers or savor fresh seafood and sundowners from a waterfront restaurant as the captivating cotton candy skies and fishing boats cast silhouettes over the marina. Local favorites include the famous Salty Dog Café and Fisher’s Sports Pub & Grill – no reservations required.

Fun Sunsets at Freshfields Village

Add an extra dose of fun to chasing sunsets at Freshfields Village, only a short bike ride away! Located next to Bohicket Marina, Freshfields Village is a fabulous open air center with upscale stores, local services (banks and business hubs), and loads of spots for sundowners, dinner and a fun sunset!

The options are endless – Freshfields Shag Night on the Dock, wine tastings and live music at FortyEight Wine Bar & Kitchen, barrel tastings at Kiawah Spirits, lakeside cocktails and jazz at the Porch Bar, or a fun family picnic on the Village Green – all with incredible sunset views.

On Island Waterfront Dining

Kiawah Island has many on-island waterfront dining options for feasts of fresh seafood, steak, sushi and classic Lowcountry cuisine, paired with panoramic ocean sunsets. Dress up for alfresco sunset dining at the award-winning Sanctuary Hotel Ocean Room or on the famous fairways of Kiawah Island’s PGA Ocean Course. Sip specialty cocktails on the verandah of the Ryder Cup Bar as the glow of the dipping sun settles on the greens – followed by fine dining in the Atlantic Room, Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s signature seafood restaurant. (Reservations essential).

Secluded Sunsets From Home

Our kids are inundated with tech gadgets, gaming devices, and a constant stream of stimulation, day in and day out. Why not skip the bustling boardwalks lined with amusement, arcades and kid-centric attractions and spend your family vacation immersed in nature on Kiawah Island?

Kiawah Island is a secluded barrier island and luxury resort community only 25 miles from Charleston, SC. Arriving on Kiawah Island is like stepping back in time to the days we knew as kids! Miles of beaches and bike trails without the crowds, nature activities and grubby hands, family picnics under the stars, and a slower pace of life to unwind, relax and spend quality time with family.

Great news for parents! The island is small (only 10 miles long x 1.5 miles wide) and the top things to do with your kids on Kiawah Island are merely a bike ride or short walk away from wherever you choose to stay.

1. Kick Off With a Classic Beach Day

Kiawah Island boasts 10 miles of beautiful beaches ranked among the best in the world! There are no noisy carnival games or oceanfront arcades – just miles of uncrowded and wide natural beaches with gorgeous white sands, rolling dunes, and gentle waves for a classic beach day with the kids. Kiawah Island’s Beachwalker Park is lifeguarded for safe swimming during season with beach gear rentals, rest rooms, a snack bar, outdoor showers, and all you need for a family beach day

Spend the day playing in the sun, sand and surf, beachcombing for treasures, building sandcastles, and switching to island time on Kiawah’s family-friendly beaches. You can watch the sunrise and sunset from the beach on Kiawah Island too, perfect for early beach walks, family bike rides, or sunset picnics with the kids.

2. Bike the Kiawah Island Trails

Kiawah Island has tons of trails (30+ miles) connecting the island and you can ride your bike everywhere! Plan a family adventure of your own at the Bass Pond Fishing Dock or crabbing dock at Blue Heron Pond or experience the best of the coastal Lowcountry on a family-friendly fishing charter or crabbing excursion on the Kiawah River. Top 10 Reasons To Spend Autumn On Kiawah

Summer may be the most popular time to visit the South Carolina barrier islands, but Kiawah Island’s sub-tropical climate is perfect for a quieter fall vacation. The heat and humidity have faded, and summer crowds have dispersed, but Kiawah Island’s natural attractions, outdoor recreation, beautiful scenery, abundance of wildlife, and friendly local community welcome visitors to the island year-round.

Nestled on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, just 25 miles south of Charleston, Kiawah Island is one of the most eco-friendly tourist destinations in the US. Temperatures on Kiawah Island stay in the warm upper 60’s and 70’s well into November and while you may not be topping up your suntan on the sand, it’s the perfect season to switch to island time, get the whole family outdoors, and enjoy a slower pace of life on Kiawah Island.

 1. Beach Days & Bike Rides

The Atlantic Ocean may (or may not) be too chilly but fall visitors to Kiawah Island have easy access to 10-miles of uncrowded, hard-packed sand perfect for beach picnics, building sandcastles, long beachcombing walks, and fun family bike rides along the coastline. Beachwalker Park ranks among some of the best beaches in the world and wherever you stay on Kiawah Island, you’re only a short walk or bike ride away.

 2. Eco-Tours & Excursions

It may be too chilly to get in the water, but the weather is perfect to paddle the Lowcountry waterways and explore the diverse ecosystem of Kiawah Island. Kiawah Island has year-round guided nature programs for every age and ability from kiddie crabbing adventures, fishing charters, and active kayaking excursions to tranquil birdwatching tours and majestic sunset cruises along the Kiawah River.

Pick up a rental and adventure alone from Mingo Point or book a guided tour for an eco-adventure through the saltwater marshes, rivers, creeks and natural splendor of Kiawah without the summer crowds.

3. Undisturbed Birdlife & Wildlife Viewing

Kiawah Island’s 10 miles of pristine shoreline, 3,000+ acres of tidal salt marshes, and ancient maritime forests are home to over 290 species of birds, 60 species of reptiles and amphibians, and 30+ species of mammals including armadillos, bobcats, raccoons, white-tailed deer, and Kiawah’s famous Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins.

Whether you’re strolling the shoreline, bike riding the Kiawah Island trails or embarking on an eco-adventure at Night Heron Park you’re highly likely to encounter wildlife during your stay on Kiawah Island. In the fall, visitors to Kiawah can catch the tail end of South Carolina’s sea turtle season, witness the unique phenomenon of dolphin strand feeding at Captain Sam’s Inlet, and ride the bike paths at dawn or dusk for the best wildlife viewing on Kiawah.

4. Book a Beach & Golf Combo

Kiawah Island is a famous golfing destination, known around the world for incredible championship courses designed (and played) by the biggest names in golf. Spring and fall are the most popular times of year to play golf on Kiawah Island with cooler temperatures, gentle ocean breezes, and tempting late fall golf deals.

Kiawah Island Golf Resort boasts seven award winning courses including five public golf courses – Oak Point by Clyde Johnson, Cougar Point by Gary Player, Turtle Point by Jack Nicklaus, Osprey Point by Tom Fazio and the legendary Ocean Course by Pete Dye. Each course has its own 19th hole clubhouse, driving range, and pro shop or you can up your game with a PGA-certified pro at the Tommy Cuthbert Golf Learning Center at Turtle Point. Be sure to book your Kiawah Island tee times and golf vacation villa well in advance.

5. Family-Friendly Fall Festivals

Skip the bustling boardwalk attractions and opt for old-fashioned finger lickin’, foot-stompin’ family-fun on Kiawah Island this fall. Get lost in a giant corn maze, pick your own pumpkins for jack-o-lantern carving, load up for a family hayride, play in the petting zoo, or even build your own scarecrow. That’s only the beginning! Fabulous feasts, foot stompin’ bluegrass bands, craft fairs, and farmers markets await at Kiawah Island’s authentic Lowcountry fall festivals.

Top 10 Things To Do On Kiawah Island This Summer

Summer is the season of family vacations, flip flops and ice cream, lazy days on the beach, and outdoor adventures the whole tribe can enjoy together. The ultimate summer vacation awaits on Kiawah Island, a breathtaking barrier island and nature conservancy on the South Carolina coastline, worlds away from the hustle and bustle of city living, yet only 25 miles from the charming and historic City of Charleston.

Ranking #2 on Travel+Leisure “Top 15 Islands in the Continental US” (second only to Hilton Head Island), Kiawah Island is a world-class vacation destination with miles of pristine natural beaches, tranquil Lowcountry landscapes, and luxury resort living in harmony with nature.

Summer is the most popular season on Kiawah Island, a season of fun and festivities, so start planning soon! Here’s our Top 10 things to do on Kiawah Island this summer.

1. Fun & Sun at Beachwalker Park

Kiawah Island’s award-winning Beachwalker Park is ranked among the best in the world, and consistently voted the most beautiful beach on the South Carolina coastline. Stretching 10-miles along the Atlantic Coastline, Beachwalker Park is a haven for nature lovers and beach-goers with wide golden beaches, clean, calm and warm waters (often above 80oF), and fewer crowds than most US summer beach destinations.

There’s no need to organize the kids and extra beach gear! Beachwalker Park boasts amazing amenities for a family beach day with stands for snacks and drinks, beach gear rentals, and even games for endless fun in the sun. Take long beach walks or bike rides along the tideline, build sandcastles, beachcomb for sand dollars, take dips in the tidal pools, learn to surf together as a family, and spot wildlife right from the beach.

It’s not uncommon for beach-goers to see deer grazing in the dunes, dolphins frolicking in the ocean, shorebirds wading in the sand, and loggerhead sea turtles nesting in the lower dunes. May through October is hatching season for Kiawah Island’s loggerhead sea turtles. If you’re in the right place, at the time of hatching, you may even experience hundreds of tiny sea turtles taking their first steps to the ocean. Book an oceanfront rental for front row seats or share a unique turtle experience with Kiawah Island’s Turtle Patrol

Wherever you stay on Kiawah Island, you’re only a bike ride away from a boardwalk to Beachwalker Park.
